What are the door knob grades?
Although most of the door knobs look quite similar to each other. In a matter of grades, they are totally different from the inside. These grades built on ANSI/BHMA standards (Read more about ANSI/BHMA Cylinders and Input Devices for Locks). These grades indicate the level of security, functionality and the materials of the door knob.
So, it is crucial to understand the differences between all the grades. In order to make it easier for you to understand, I have written this article.
- Grade 1 – Highest grade.
- This grade is found in commercial buildings, government institutions and other public places. Grade 1 door knobs are the most secure and have the best durability and functionality. The parts are made of high quality materials. There are special parts inside the lock that make it hard or even impossible to drill in. It can be used excessively, hundreds or thousands of times a day. It is highly recommended to invest in grade 1 locks for any commercial or small business usage. ‘Keys On Wheels’ locksmith pro’s are able to install, repair or rekey your grade 1 door knob.
- Grade 2 – Average grade.
- These lock sets are meant to be installed on a commercial or a residential purpose. Keys On Wheels technicians installing grade 2 door knobs more than a few every week. Typically, we install these locks on commercial doors, but from a time to time we receive requests to install grade 2 locks on a residential door. As a matter of fact, if you own a business or building, Grade 1 is the ultimate solution for you. Grade 2 is the minimum grade for any business, store or residential building. Do not settle on less than grade 2 lock-sets, it will pay off when the time will come.
- Grade 3 – Minimum grade.
- When you go to a gas station in order to find a lock set, and find a lock-set for $8-10, it is probably a grade 3 door knob. These door knobs are made from the cheapest materials, minimum security and they are easy to be break. People often buy those lock-sets only for a temporary situation, when an immediate solution is needed. If you are a home owner, don’t let yourself use grade 3 in order to protect your loved ones or property. Do yourself a big favor and call Keys On Wheels. Your sleep will be much more comfortable after you will upgrade your locks to a higher level.
Notice: Does color matter? Of course it does, but only to your eyes. Sometimes people get confused thinking a metal finish (26D), or an oil bronze finish (10B), are of an higher grade than the gold finish (US3).
This mistake stems from the fact that in most commercial buildings, metallic locks are used. You have to know that you can buy any grade in a few colors. Color doesn’t indicate the grade of the lock set!
Overall conclusions
Grade 1 door knobs, using for heavy duty purposes, high security and long durability. Grade 2 meant to be set on a residential property which the home owner preferring high security along with durability and high performance. Grade 3 will be used as a temporary lock-set. It should be for meantime, until you will install a higher grade door knob.
